Frequently Asked Questions
What is an expedition cruise?
Adventure. Wildlife. Remote locations. Science. Learning.
An expedition cruise focuses on exploring some of the most remote places on Earth while learning about conservation, wildlife, and the incredible environments you're visiting.
Unlike traditional cruise ships, expedition cruises aren't centered around Broadway shows or casinos. Your entertainment is all around you.
Who enjoys expedition cruising?
If you value nature, wildlife, photography, history, and learning, you'll probably love expedition cruising.
People who enjoy getting outside, exploring the natural world, and learning from expert naturalist guides often find expedition cruising to be one of the most rewarding travel experiences available.
Am I too old for an expedition cruise?
Age is much less important than mobility and balance.
Many expedition travelers are active retirees who enjoy hiking, Zodiac excursions, and spending time outdoors.
The most important requirement is being able to step safely between the ship and the Zodiac while maintaining good balance.
Will I be roughing it?
Absolutely not!
Modern expedition ships offer comfortable accommodations, excellent cuisine, knowledgeable expedition teams, hot tubs, fitness rooms, spa treatments, and many other amenities.
Gone are the days of explorers sleeping on wooden bunks. Today's expedition cruises combine adventure with comfort.
What wildlife might I see?
That depends entirely on your destination.
You may encounter penguins, whales, seals, polar bears, puffins, seabirds, marine iguanas, giant tortoises, and countless other incredible animals.
One important note...you'll never see penguins and polar bears together. Polar bears live in the Arctic, while penguins live in Antarctica.
Smart planning on the penguins' part, if you ask me!
Do I need previous hiking or kayaking experience?
Usually not.
Most expedition cruises offer activities for a variety of fitness levels, allowing everyone to participate at a pace that's comfortable.
Will I get seasick?
Maybe.
Some expedition destinations, such as Antarctica, involve open ocean crossings like the Drake Passage, where significant motion is possible.
Other destinations, like the Galápagos Islands, are often remarkably calm.
Modern expedition ships have excellent stabilizers, and I have plenty of tips and tricks to help my clients minimize motion sickness.
Are expedition cruises all-inclusive?
Yes, most of them are.
Let's be honest...where are you going to find a restaurant in Antarctica? 😉
Most expedition cruises include accommodations, meals, lectures, and expedition equipment. Excursion policies vary slightly by cruise line, and I'll help you choose the one that best fits your travel style.
How do I pack for an expedition cruise?
Layering is everything.
For the Galápagos, you'll want shorts, T-shirts, swimsuits, and a light sweater.
For Antarctica, Greenland, Norway, Alaska, or other cold-weather destinations, you'll need waterproof outerwear, warm layers, gloves, hats, and sturdy hiking shoes.
Most Antarctica cruise lines provide a waterproof expedition jacket and insulated boots for shore landings.
One more thing...always pack a swimsuit. Even in Antarctica, you'll want it for the hot tub or sauna!
Is an expedition cruise worth the cost?
For nature lovers, absolutely.
If seeing extraordinary wildlife and visiting places that very few people on Earth will ever experience sounds exciting to you, expedition cruising offers incredible value and memories that will last a lifetime.
How do I know which expedition cruise is right for me?
That depends on what excites you.
Do you dream about standing among thousands of penguins in Antarctica? Watching polar bears roam the Arctic? Snorkeling with sea lions in the Galápagos? Photographing humpback whales in Alaska?
Every destination offers something unique, and every expedition ship has its own personality.
I'll ask lots of questions so I can recommend the expedition that's the best fit for you.
Who is an expedition cruise best suited for?
Expedition cruising is for curious travelers and wildlife lovers.
If your dream vacation involves spotting whales instead of shopping, learning from naturalists instead of watching Broadway shows, and exploring places that few people ever visit, you'll probably love expedition cruising.
You don't have to be an extreme adventurer. You simply need curiosity, a reasonable level of mobility, and a desire to experience our incredible planet.
Still have questions?
Expedition cruising isn't for everyone, but for the right traveler, it can be completely life-changing. I'd love to help you decide which destination and expedition cruise line best fits your interests and sense of adventure.
