Frequently Asked Questions
Is Croatia a good destination for first-time visitors to Europe?
Absolutely! I am completely obsessed with Croatia.
The first time I visited, I expected it to be beautiful, but its incredible charm completely snuck up on me and hasn't let go since. Croatia combines stunning coastlines, historic cities, excellent food, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, making it an easy and enjoyable destination for first-time visitors to Europe.
Do I need water shoes?
Yes. Most Croatian beaches are made of smooth pebbles rather than sand. This is actually one of the reasons the Adriatic is so unbelievably crystal clear. There isn't any sand getting stirred up to cloud the water.
Water shoes make entering and exiting the sea much more comfortable, and they're one of the few items I always recommend packing for Croatia.
Can I drink the tap water?
Yes! Tap water throughout Croatia is safe to drink and is excellent quality.
Many towns even have public water filling stations, so you can carry a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day with fresh, clean drinking water.
Is Croatia expensive?
Honestly, it's more expensive than it used to be.
Since Croatia joined the European Union and adopted the euro, prices have increased. However, it is still generally less expensive than destinations like France, Switzerland, or Italy.
Popular coastal towns can be pricey during the summer, so visiting during the shoulder seasons of April, May, September, or October often provides excellent value.
Is a Croatian yacht cruise the same as a cruise ship?
Not even close!
A Croatian yacht typically carries around 30 guests, creating a small and intimate atmosphere. These beautiful yachts dock directly in charming coastal towns and stay overnight, giving you time to wander the villages long after the day-trippers have gone home.
During the day, you can jump right off the yacht into the Adriatic for exclusive swim stops, paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply floating in crystal-clear water.
The experience feels much more like traveling with a small group of friends than sailing on a large cruise ship.
How much walking is involved?
If you travel with me, you'd better be prepared for lots of steps and stairs!
Just kidding...I won't make you do all the stairs. 😉
That said, places like Dubrovnik are built on hills, so you'll definitely encounter plenty of steps. Most Croatian towns also have beautiful cobblestone streets that are charming to explore but can be tough on your feet and ankles.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and it's always helpful to get your body used to walking and climbing stairs before your trip.
Is Croatia safe?
Yes! Croatia has actually spoiled me for the rest of Europe.
In cities like Paris, London, or Rome, I'm always reminding travelers to be mindful of pickpockets and keep a close eye on their phones and valuables.
In Croatia, you can truly relax. Pickpocketing is uncommon, violent crime is rare, and Croatia is consistently ranked among the safest countries to visit in Europe.
What is the best time to visit Croatia?
May and June offer cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and beautiful weather, although the sea is still a bit chilly.
September and October are actually my favorite months. The weather is still wonderfully warm, the Adriatic is perfect for swimming, and the crowds are much smaller than during the peak summer months.
Should I visit Split or Dubrovnik?
Yes!
Both deserve a visit.
Split offers a lively atmosphere built around Diocletian's Palace, while Dubrovnik is famous for its magnificent medieval walls and spectacular coastal scenery.
If your itinerary allows, I always recommend experiencing both.
Do I need to rent a car?
No...unless you really enjoy driving.
Only one of my clients has specifically requested a rental car because they wanted to drive a convertible along the coast and through the mountains to Plitvice National Park.
For everyone else, I've arranged private transfers, ferries, and organized excursions so they could simply relax and enjoy the journey.
That said, Croatia has excellent roads and very good signage. I drove there myself without any problems. If you love road trips, Croatia is actually a much easier place to drive than Italy or Greece.
Why do you specialize in Croatia?
Because Croatia completely stole my heart.
The first time I visited, I expected beautiful beaches and historic towns. What I didn't expect was how quickly I would fall in love with the country. The people are incredibly welcoming, the Adriatic is the clearest water I've ever seen, and every island seems to have its own personality.
I've returned multiple times because I genuinely enjoy being there, and every visit teaches me something new. I love introducing travelers to a destination that still surprises so many people. Seeing my clients experience Croatia for the first time is honestly one of my favorite parts of this job.
Who is a trip to Croatia best suited for?
Croatia is ideal for travelers who enjoy a mix of history, beautiful scenery, great food, and time on the water. It's perfect if you like staying active, wandering charming old towns, swimming in crystal-clear water, and ending the day with a delicious seafood dinner overlooking the harbor.
It's also one of my favorite destinations for people who have "done Italy" or "done Greece" and are looking for somewhere just as beautiful but with fewer crowds and a completely different feel.
