Frequently Asked Questions

Is South Africa safe for tourists?

Yes.

Most visitors enjoy South Africa without any problems by following sensible precautions and traveling with experienced guides and trusted local partners.

There are certainly areas of Cape Town that I wouldn't recommend exploring on your own. When you travel with me, I carefully choose accommodations, transportation, and local operators that prioritize safety and provide an outstanding experience.

When on Safari, just stick with your guide and you will be fine. No solo wanderings into a lion’s den…. :-)

Do I need malaria medication?

It depends on where in Africa you're traveling.

The majority of South Africa does not require malaria medication because much of the country has a dry climate.

My guests traveling to Cape Town and to safari lodges near Johannesburg do not need malaria medication.

If you're heading into Kruger National Park or the far northeastern part of South Africa, malaria is present and medication is recommended.

Travelers visiting East Africa or Victoria Falls should also discuss malaria prevention with a travel medicine clinic before departure.

What vaccinations do I need?

Vaccination recommendations vary by country, so I always encourage travelers to speak with a travel health clinic.

Your routine vaccinations should be up to date, and depending on your itinerary, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, or Typhoid may be recommended.

For my Cape Town and South Africa safari itineraries, a yellow fever vaccine is not required.

Is Egypt safe for travelers?

Yes.

Millions of travelers visit Egypt every year.

I've had many clients, friends, and colleagues visit Egypt recently, including in 2026, and they've all had wonderful experiences.

When I travel to Egypt, I choose trusted partners that prioritize safety, security, and exceptional service. Guided tours allow you to experience Egypt's incredible history while benefiting from organized transportation, experienced Egyptologists, and well-established tourism infrastructure.

What should I wear on an African safari?

Layers.

Many people expect Africa to be hot all day, but early morning and evening game drives can actually be quite chilly.

Neutral-colored, comfortable clothing works best, along with lightweight layers that you can remove as the day warms up and add again once the sun goes down.

What animals will I see on safari?

Wildlife sightings vary every day because the animals roam freely.

The expert safari guides I work with know where the animals are most likely to be and do an amazing job helping guests find the wildlife they're hoping to see.

I've been fortunate enough to see the Big Five along with elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, hippos, ostriches, colorful birds, antelope, and so many other incredible animals.

How much walking is involved?

Most safaris involve more riding than walking.

You'll spend much of your time exploring in open safari vehicles, although optional walking safaris are available in some reserves.

If you're also visiting Cape Town, you'll find wonderful opportunities for walking tours, hiking, biking, and exploring the city on foot.

Is the food safe?

Yes.

I work with reputable hotels, safari lodges, restaurants, and cruise partners that maintain excellent food safety standards.

The quality of dining in both South Africa and Egypt often surprises first-time visitors.

Can I drink the tap water?

Tap water in Cape Town is safe to drink and is excellent quality.

When traveling on safari, in East Africa, Egypt, or Morocco, I recommend drinking bottled or filtered water.

The tour companies and river cruise partners I work with provide safe drinking water throughout your journey.

Why should I use a travel advisor for a trip to Africa?

Because Africa isn't just one trip.

It's multiple countries, flights, safari lodges, visa requirements, vaccination recommendations, and logistics.

Could you spend weeks researching everything yourself? Absolutely.

Would most people rather spend that time dreaming about elephants, penguins, wine country, ancient temples, and sunsets over the savanna? I know I would.

I've personally experienced many of the destinations I sell and work with trusted local partners who know these countries inside and out. My goal is to make planning simple so that all you have to do is enjoy one of the most incredible adventures of your life.

Who is a trip to Africa best suited for?

Almost everyone comes home from Africa saying the same thing:

"I wish I had done this sooner."

African safaris are perfect for travelers who love wildlife, photography, nature, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Cape Town is ideal for people who enjoy incredible food, wine, hiking, history, and spectacular scenery.

Egypt is perfect for anyone fascinated by ancient civilizations and some of the world's most remarkable archaeological sites.

If you're looking for a vacation that leaves you with stories you'll tell for the rest of your life, Africa may be exactly what you're looking for.

Still have questions?

Africa is one of my absolute favorite places to help clients explore because every itinerary is different. If you're wondering whether an African safari, Cape Town, Egypt, Morocco, or another destination is the right fit for you, I'd love to chat and help you start planning.
