Frequently Asked Questions

Are river cruises worth the money?

Yes! River cruises are an incredible value for the money. People often see the price and think it is expensive, but when you consider that your accommodations, meals, travel between destinations, beer and wine with lunch and dinner on many cruise lines, daily excursions, onboard entertainment, and transportation are included, the value becomes much more apparent.

I've done similar itineraries by land, and I spent so much time on buses, taxis, packing, unpacking, repacking, figuring out tours, paying entrance fees, and navigating between hotels. River cruising makes all of that simple so you can spend your time actually enjoying Europe instead of worrying about logistics.

What is the difference between a river cruise and an ocean cruise?

Size. I'm not kidding...size really matters in this situation!

River cruise ships are much smaller, typically carrying around 100 to 150 guests, and they dock right in the heart of cities and towns rather than large commercial ports. The experience is much more relaxed, immersive, and focused on local culture rather than entertainment at sea.

Will I get seasick on a river cruise?

Unlikely. Most people don't experience motion sickness on a river cruise because the water is so calm. There are no large waves or ocean swells.

I've found that many of my clients, including myself, who get seasick on ocean cruises are perfectly happy on a river cruise.

Are river cruises good for first-time travelers to Europe?

Absolutely. River cruises are one of my favorite ways to experience Europe for the first time. You unpack once while visiting multiple destinations, transportation is seamless, and guided excursions help you become familiar with each destination before exploring on your own.

Are river cruises good for solo travelers?

Yes! I've traveled solo myself and have made wonderful friends over meals and on excursions. The small ships, included excursions, and shared dining make it easy to meet fellow travelers, which is why I often recommend river cruising to my solo traveler clients.

How much walking is involved?

That depends on the excursion you choose. Most cruise lines offer a variety of activity levels, ranging from leisurely city tours to longer hikes and bike rides. I help match travelers with the cruise line and itinerary that best fits their mobility and travel style.

What should I pack for a river cruise?

Comfortable walking shoes are the most important item. Casual daytime clothing, layers for changing weather, and one or two dressier outfits for dinners are usually sufficient. River cruising is much more relaxed than many first-time travelers expect.

I also provide all of my clients with a destination-specific packing list based on the time of year and itinerary.

Which river cruise line is best?

Of course I have my favorites! The most important thing is matching you with the right cruise line for you.

Every river cruise line has its own personality, and my job is to help you find the one that best matches your travel style, interests, activity level, and budget.

Can I do my own sightseeing?

Absolutely. Included excursions provide an excellent introduction to each destination, and most afternoons include free time to explore independently if you wish.

Do I need travel insurance?

Absolutely yes! I strongly recommend travel insurance for every international trip. It protects your investment if unexpected events force you to cancel or interrupt your trip, and it provides valuable medical and travel assistance while you're abroad.

I cannot emphasize enough how important international medical insurance is while traveling.

Why should I book my river cruise through you instead of booking online?

Experience. Experience and knowledge really matter when choosing the right river cruise for you.

You absolutely can book your own river cruise online. However, booking with an experienced travel advisor can save you so much time, ensure that you're on a cruise line that matches your vibe, and decrease the stress of planning.

There are dozens of river cruise lines, hundreds of itineraries, and countless cabin categories. They all look wonderful online, but each offers a different experience. My job is to get to know you and match you with the cruise line that best fits your travel style.

Perhaps most importantly, you'll have someone before, during, and after your travels who has your back if anything goes sideways.

Who is a river cruise best suited for?

River cruising is perfect for travelers who enjoy exploring destinations rather than spending all day on the ship. If you love history, culture, food, beautiful scenery, and waking up somewhere new each morning, you'll probably love river cruising.

It's also an excellent choice for travelers who don't enjoy huge crowds or the "theme park at sea" atmosphere of large ocean cruise ships. River cruises are relaxed, intimate, and immersive. If that sounds like your travel style, we should definitely talk.

Still have questions?

I love talking travel, and no question is too small. If you're wondering whether river cruising is right for you, let's schedule a complimentary consultation. I'd be happy to answer your questions, learn about your travel style, and help you decide if it's the perfect fit.
