Victoria Falls: Why This Wonder of the World Belongs on Your Bucket List
If you have a bucket list (and let’s be honest, we all do), Victoria Falls deserves a prime spot on it. This is not just a waterfall. This is Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders,” a mile-wide curtain of water that crashes into the Zambezi Gorge with so much force you can hear it before you see it. The mist rises so high it creates rainbows by day and moonbows at night. It’s a jaw-dropping natural wonder that makes you stop in your tracks, pull out your camera, and then put it away again so you can just stand there, grinning like a kid at their first fireworks show.
But seeing the Falls is just the beginning. Victoria Falls is one of those rare places where adventure, wildlife, culture, and pure AWE all meet. Here are just a few reasons why I think this iconic African destination is worth every penny, and why I’m leading a small group there after Safari Swing in September 2026.
The Setting is Absolutely Unreal
Imagine walking through a rainforest, even though it hasn’t rained for weeks, because the spray from the Falls creates its own microclimate. The air is cool, damp, and filled with the sound of rushing water. You’ll pass viewpoint after viewpoint, each one giving you a new angle on the Falls, until you’re practically drenched, and laughing about it.
It’s a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Playground
Victoria Falls is not just for photographers and scenery lovers (although they’re in heaven). It’s for thrill seekers, too. You can:
Zipline across Batoka Gorge and scream your head off in the best way possible
Swim in Devil’s Pool — yes, literally right on the edge of the Falls if you dare
Take a helicopter “Flight of Angels” and see the whole area from above
Meet rescued elephants in an ethical encounter that will melt your heart
Join a township tour and connect with locals for a deeper understanding of Zimbabwean life
And then there’s the sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, where hippos pop up like whack-a-moles, elephants come down to drink, and the sky puts on a show that will ruin you for all future sunsets.
The Food and Culture Are Part of the Experience
One of my favorite nights is the Boma Dinner & Drum Show. Picture this: delicious Zimbabwean cuisine, lively dancing, and drumming so contagious you’ll end up joining in. Yes, you will be given a drum. Yes, you will use it. And yes, you will have the time of your life.
The Lodging is Part of the Magic
For our hosted trip in September 2026, we’ll be staying at the beautiful Victoria Falls Safari Suites in spacious two- and three-bedroom suites with private patios overlooking a waterhole frequented by warthogs, bushbuck, and an endless parade of birds. It’s the perfect blend of privacy, comfort, and lodge-style luxury. Talk about coffee with a view!
Victoria Falls offers a wide range of accommodations to suit every traveler’s style and budget. There are cozy lodges for those who just want a comfy place to sleep between adventures, charming boutique properties tucked away in the bush, and stunning all-inclusive luxury resorts along the Zambezi River where everything is taken care of.
When I plan trips for my clients, I match them with the property that fits their style, their budget, and the kind of trip they want to have, whether that’s a splash-out luxury celebration or a more low-key adventure.
It’s One of the Most Popular Places to Visit in Africa (for Good Reason)
Victoria Falls is a bucket-list favorite because it combines everything we crave from a trip to Africa: breathtaking nature, thrilling adventure, cultural encounters, and that sense of being somewhere truly wild. Yes, it is a bit of an investment, but this is the trip you will be talking about for years to come.
